Program Description:
There is a pervasive and false perception that highly motivated students from under-resourced backgrounds will attend and finish college without the support services that are deemed necessary for under-resourced students on the cusp of achievement. This misconception is rooted in the idea that being motivated is all one needs in order to succeed academically, yet there is a large body of evidence that proves otherwise. Breakthrough Twin Cities helps motivated students overcome adversity to prepare for college with the support of older students passionate about education. Students who are accepted to Breakthrough Twin Cities make a 6-year commitment to the program. Students attend summer sessions during middle school, and receive year-round support throughout their six years in the program. Services include: academic enrichment and support, tutoring and mentoring services, test preparation, college essay coaching, and individualized college and financial aid counseling. The goal of Breakthrough Twin Cities is to ensure that all of our students are aware that a 4-year college is within their reach, and to provide services that support them on their path to college.
