Program Description:
Gaining Early Awareness and Readiness for Undergraduate Programs (GEAR UP) New Mexico is a seven-year initiative funded by the U.S. Department of Education in 17 states across the country. GEAR UP New Mexico, a division of the New Mexico Higher Education Department, is at work in 12 school districts.

Mission Statement:
Increase the number of New Mexico students who enroll in and complete the college and career-technical programs of their choice by optimizing federal, state, and private resources to support a group of 5,500 New Mexico students as they progress from seventh through high school graduation.
Objectives:
•Increase student and family knowledge regarding postsecondary education preparation and financing, and increase the educational expectations of participating students and their parents •Increase the high school graduation and college enrollment rates of GEAR UP students •Improve the academic performance of students so that they are prepared to do college level work when they do enroll in postsecondary programs •Foster systemic change in GEAR UP schools that will outlast the grant funding
