Program Description:
In addition to providing well-maintained, safe and affordable housing for more than 1,000 families of low and moderate income (30% of whom are formerly homeless) in 17 gut-renovated apartment buildings, New Settlement provides an increasingly comprehensive matrix of school-year and summer programs. Programs are open to all neighborhood residents and serve more than 5,800 people in 2012—including more than 4,300 children and teens and 1,500 adults. In September 2012, we opened the New Settlement Community Campus – with two all-new public schools for 1,200 children and teens (preK-5 and 6-12) and a spacious community center with indoor aquatics facility, dance studio, multipurpose activity rooms and green roof. Spearheaded by New Settlement, in partnership with NYC DoE and the School Construction Authority, the new campus is the largest investment in improving the quality of life of community residents that has been made in our area of the Southwest Bronx since we opened our housing complex 22 years ago. COLLEGE ACCESS AND SUCCESS INITIATIVES Anchored by our storefront College Access Center, the overarching goal of our college access programming since 2002 is to broaden awareness of and focus options for post-secondary education among community youth. We work to help increasing numbers of teens to enter well-chosen colleges with viable financial-aid packages and persist through college graduation. In our community-based center and at our Student Success Center on the Taft Educational Campus, we offer a coordinated, multi-year program series and one-on-one educational counseling through which teens and their parents can explore up-to-date information and get practical support for (a) staying on an academic track through high school graduation, and (b) pursuing post-secondary educational options leading to employment in a chosen career.

Mission Statement:
OVERVIEW OF NEW SETTLEMENT APARTMENTS Founded in 1989 and opened in 1990, New Settlement Apartments is a nonprofit organization with a 22-year, demonstrated commitment to housing, community revitalization, youth development and community organizing in the Southwest Bronx. Its extensive year-round community services and educational programs are structured in direct response to the interests of residents of our SW Bronx neighborhood (CD 4, CSD 9), who are primarily low-income Blacks and Latinas/os, including many new immigrants. An integral part of New Settlement’s progressive housing philosophy is that “housing is not just bricks and mortar.” Thus, our mission is not only to rebuild and maintain a sizeable portion of the housing stock in this impoverished neighborhood, but also to support the rebuilding of the social capital of this community.
