SASI is a nonprofit organization incorporated by both the Navajo Nation and the State of New Mexico. The Corporation receives its funding through a Public Law 100-297 Indian Self-determination grant with the Bureau of Indian Affairs for all three entities. SASI is governed by a locally elected school board whose five members represent the various chapters of the Navajo Nation from where the students originate.

The Corporation's roots began in 1976 as a High School program designed to address the needs of those students who had not succeeded in area public schools.
