Program Description:
Since 1999, Barry University's College Reach-Out Program engages middle and high school students in Miami-Dade County Public Schools in counseling, peer leadership, mentoring, and college access and readiness activities year-round. This unique program addresses the root of underachievement, promotes youth development skills including literacy, math, and science skills, and supports the various learning styles of youth. As a result of this innovative program, CROP participants are expected to be academically and personally enriched.

Mission Statement:
The Mission of the College Reach Out program is to increase the number of low-income, educationally disadvantaged students in grades 6-12, who upon high school graduation, are admitted to and successfully complete post-secondary education
Objectives:
Goal #1: Ensure that students graduating from high school are prepared to succeed in college, increasing the number of young people who obtain a postsecondary degree with labor-market value. Goal #2: Students are able to make appropriate decisions for entering and advancing in a college and career pathway and experience lifelong success. Goal #3: Increase access to the resources students need to be successful in their education and career goals. These goals are accomplished by * Mentoring Middle and high school students are paired with college mentors for the course of the school year. Mentors serve as role models, support, and guidance, regarding college admission, financial aid, and degree and career opportunities. * Summer Residential Program Middle and high school students are engaged in a one-week Summer Residential program on a college/university campus. The program includes learning experiential sessions, admission/financial aid dissemination, and college exploration. The summer program also allows students to meet with college and writing coaches to assist them as they develop a senior portfolio. * Counseling Individual and group counseling services are offered to all CROP Participants and their families. Counseling component address emotional and behavioral issues the underlying causes of underachievement, suspension, and dropouts, low-self-esteem etc. *Workshops Workshops focused on leadership, healthy relationships, conflict resolution, career and college success
