Breakthrough Cincinnati is based on the Breakthrough/ Summerbridge model that originated in 1978 in San Francisco. Over the past 30 years, Breakthrough has grown to 33 sites across the U.S. and in Hong Kong. As a collaborative, Breakthrough has seen over 85 percent of its graduates move on to strong academic high school programs and attend top colleges and universities across the country. Over 60 percent of the teaching staff has gone on to pursue careers in education. Breakthrough Cincinnati is proud of equally high rates of success achieved over the twenty years since its inception.

Breakthrough Cincinnati has a dual mission: 1) to increase access to social and educational opportunities for high-potential, middle school students and put them on the path to college and 2) to inspire high school and college students to pursue careers in education.

Breakthrough seeks to be a community leader in educational programming for students facing barriers to educational opportunities in the greater Cincinnati area. Students receive four years of high quality summer and school year programming. They are counseled to enter academically rigorous college preparatory high schools and fulfill college-going expectations. Students will use the tools and skills learned to be successful leaders in Breakthrough and in their communities, and feel bolstered in their love for learning by a positive peer group. Teachers provide the highest quality and engaging instruction to their students, are supported by professionals to succeed in the classroom, and prepared by their experiences at Breakthrough to enter careers in education. Breakthrough is a sustainable program with the staffing, financial resources, and strategic partnerships to provide services for the community of students from Cincinnati and beyond.
