Helping Young People Excel — Los Angeles (HYPE) provides talented low-income students in Los Angeles with the guidance and resources to qualify for admission at elite college-prep independent high schools. HYPE provides a blend of intensive programming and services to help students gain admission, finance their education, and succeed in high school and beyond.

Mission Statement:
MISSION Helping Young People Excel provides talented low-income middle school students with the guidance and resources to get into and succeed at elite independent high schools in the Los Angeles area. VISION The HYPE vision is to reshape the landscape of struggling low-income communities by providing young leaders access to superior educational and life-changing opportunities at independent high schools in Los Angeles, providing the cultural capital to propel personal success and community change.
Objectives:
1) Goal: To prepare students academically and culturally for a rigorous high school experience The Summer Prep Program is an Intensive 7-week summer program for incoming HYPE students. Students work independently to develop scholarly skills and meet twice a week for four hours at a time to focus on academics. The program consists of math and verbal test preparation, writing workshops, summer reading sessions, and leadership skills development. Once a week, students take field trips to local museums, educational centers, and cultural points of interest often not provided in low-income communities. In addition to field trips, students learn from guest speakers regarding education and career opportunities. Students are provided lunch and transportation during group sessions. 2) Goal: To prepare students academically for the independent high school application process. The HYPE School Year Program is an intensive supplementary academic program for HYPE students during the 7th and 8th grade school year. The program consists of math and verbal test preparation, essay preparation, interview preparation, application completion support, HYPE book club, and leadership skills development. Once a month all HYPE students meet with a HYPE Consultant to discuss application statuses and high school issues. 3) Goal: To support students academically, culturally, and socially during their independent school careers. The HYPE High School Program provides a support network for students in grades 9-12. The program consists of academic check-ins, group meetings, community service opportunities, SAT prep, and college guidance. HYPE high school students come together to provide each other a strong support group to further encourage their success at independent schools.
