Program Description:
TRiO Upward Bound at the USM serves 64 high school students from Bonny Eagle, Massabesic, and Sacopee Valley High Schools and 63 students from Biddeford and Sanford High Schools. All students participate in academic year activities until they graduate from high school. Typically during the summers after each school year, students will attend the residential UB Summer Academy for a one-week intensive program or a four-week academic program. Students will meet weekly with Upward Bound staff at their own high schools to: •monitor and support academic progress; •assess academic and career interests; •receive academic advising and tutoring; •prepare for PSAT/SAT/ACT/Accuplacer tests; •develop a personalized College Success Plan; •receive assistance with college selection, application, financial aid and scholarship processes Each summer, students are required to participate in the residential UB Summer Academy. Students who have just finished their sophomore year will attend the Academy for a four-week academic program and students who have just finished their freshmen and junior years will attend a one-week intensive program.
Mission Statement:
TRiO Upward Bound (UB) at USM assists high school students in graduating from high school, preparing for success in college, and graduating from college within six years of enrolling.
Objectives:
Objective 1: 80 % of participants served during the project year will have a cumulative GPA of 2.5 or better on a four point scale at the end of school year. Objective 2: 50% of UB seniors served during the project year will have achieved at the proficient level on state assessments in reading/language arts and math. Objective 3: 90% of project participants served during the project year will continue in school for the next academic year, at the next grade level, or will have graduated from secondary school with a regular secondary school diploma. Objective 4: 85% of all current and prior year UB participants who at the time of entrance into the project had a expected high school graduate date in the school year, will complete a rigorous secondary school program of study and graduate in the school year with a regular secondary school diploma. Objective 5: 80% of all current and prior UB participants, who at the time of entrance into the project had an expected high school graduation date in the school year, will enroll in a program of postsecondary education by the fall term immediately following high school graduation or will have received notification, by the fall term immediately following high school, from an institution of higher education, of acceptance but deferred enrollment until the next academic semester. Objective 6: 60% of participants who enrolled in a program of postsecondary education by the fall term immediately following high school graduation or by the next academic term as a result of acceptance by deferred enrollment, will attain either an associate's or bachelor's degree within six years following graduation from high school.
