Program Description:
Meritus Scholars receive a $16,000 award that includes a four-year scholarship and end-to-end support services that includes student coaching, mentoring, career awareness. They also benefit from a network of individuals for opportunities to connect, learn, and achieve throughout college and beyond. This holistic approach, framed by Scholarsâ resilience and determination to succeed, has resulted in an impressive 88% graduation rate. Meritus Scholars pursue graduate school, entrepreneurship, and careers in a range of fields on the way to transforming their lives and communities. Staff Coaching Meritus staff employs a student success coaching and case management approach to support Scholars with the transition to college, academic planning, financial aid and budgeting, and career development. Donors Generous donors throughout the San Francisco community members provide encouragement and validation through their financial investment in Scholarsâ pursuit of higher education. Scholars write an update letter for donors and Meritus twice per year to share insights and celebrate milestones on the journey through college. Career Mentors Career mentors are professionals from a variety of backgrounds who work with Scholars on project-based career and professional skills. Peer mentors Older Meritus Scholars connect with new Scholars on campuses to provide advice on resources, professors, and other aspects of college. Alumni Alumni volunteer as mentors, interviewers, and advocates for Meritus and Scholars. Campus-based resources Meritus works to ensure that Scholars are connected to campus-based resources for support and engagement. Employers Businesses and organizations in the community expose Scholars to a range of experiences leading to informed decision-making about post-college opportunities. To that end, Meritus empowers low-income youth in the community who possess grit and ambition to complete a college degree and prepare for post-college success through a combination of scholarships, coaching, and personal mentorship. Our Impact Meritus’ success lies in its ability to tap into the community, leverage resources, and facilitate direct stewardship of its Scholars. Our grassroots, hands-on approach is a cornerstone for success. 88% of Meritus Scholars graduate from four-year colleges, compared with 23% of low-income students nationally. Their accomplishments strengthen the fabric of the community.
